This is the most common reason people contact us, and it is worth being straightforward about
what a test will and will not do for a relationship.
What it can do
It can test specific factual claims. If the dispute is about whether something particular
happened, on a particular occasion, with a particular person, that is exactly the kind of narrow
question a polygraph is designed around.
It can also give an innocent partner a way to be heard. People in this position often describe
running out of options: they have denied something repeatedly, and repetition has stopped counting
for anything. An independent examination is a way of saying “test me” that carries some weight.
What it cannot do
It cannot tell you whether your relationship is worth continuing, and it cannot restore trust on
its own. We have seen people get the answer they hoped for and still find that the suspicion does
not lift, because the suspicion was never really about the one incident being tested.
It also cannot answer a vague question. “Have you ever been unfaithful?” spans years and rests on
a definition the two of you may not share. Vague questions produce unreliable results, and a
responsible examiner will push back on them rather than take your money.
Before you book
Two things are worth thinking about honestly.
First, your partner has to genuinely agree. An examination carried out under pressure is not
valid, and we will end an appointment if it becomes clear someone was pushed into attending. An
ultimatum is not consent.
Second, think about what you will do with each possible answer. If a passed test would not
actually settle it for you, a test is probably not what you need — and relationship counselling may
serve you better, either instead of a test or alongside one.
We would rather talk you out of an appointment that will not help than take a booking that leaves
you no further forward.
